Latex paint applied to a roadway by Traffic Lines, Inc. |
Latex Paint: for traffic markings is usually white or yellow and is capable of holding glass beads for reflectivity.
I. Surface preparation:
a) Existing striped asphalt or concrete roadways.
1. Latex paint can cover any type of marking excluding pavement marking tape.
2. Existing markings must not have flaking or chipping.
If you have existing temporary markings down, it is not necessary to remove them as long as the markings follow the guidelines above.
Removal of existing latex is not required unless the old latex is chipping or flaking. Existing road markings can be removed by grinding, shot blasting, or in the case of tape, pulling up by hand.
b) Unmarked concrete or asphalt roadways.
1. All surfaces must be dry and free of any loose debris.
2. New Concrete can have latex paint applied to it almost immediately after it is put down.
3. New Asphalt can be striped with latex pavement markings almost immediately after it is put down. Having the roadway free of these debris items will allow for a better bond and a longer lasting line. Waiting also helps prevent any of these oils, dirt, etc. from being tracked or deposited onto a new latex stripe, thus keeping the new stripe bright and clean.
II. Temperature:
Both the pavement surface and ambient air temperature must be at least 50 degrees F prior to striping. This should be checked at least hourly when weather conditions cause temperatures to drop during the course of the striping operation. Note: The drying time will be increased when striping at low temperatures.
