The Tape Process...

Tape being applied to a roadway by Traffic Lines, Inc.

I. Surface preparation:

a) Existing striped asphalt or concrete roadways.

1. Existing markings must be a single coat of no more than 15 mils initially.

2. Existing markings must not have flaking or chipping.

If you have existing temporary markings down, it is not necessary to remove them as long as the markings follow the guidelines above.

If you have existing paint, thermoplastic, polyester, or epoxy pavement markings, they must be removed at least by 90% to insure adequate bonding. Removal of existing tape is required. Tape ends cannot be overlapped on the pavement surface. Existing road markings can be removed by grinding, shot blasting, or in the case of tape, pulling up by hand.

b) Unmarked concrete or asphalt roadways.

1. All surfaces must be dry and free of any loose debris.

2. New Concrete must be allowed to cure at least 14 days, and must be mechanically abraded to remove any curing compounds or surface film.

3. New Asphalt can be striped with tape pavement markings during the final roll of asphalt. It is recommended that a new asphalt roadway be striped with tape immediately. This allows for the tape to have a better bond to the roadway and a longer lasting time.

II. Application Procedures:

a) Pre-mark the road using chalk or temporary paint.

b) Apply the adhesive to the asphalt or concrete.

c) Apply the tape to the surface of the road using the proper applicating devices.

      III. Temperature:

The pavement surface must be at least 70 degrees F and the air temperature must be 60 degrees F prior to striping. This should be checked at least hourly when weather conditions cause temperatures to drop during the course of the striping operation. Note: Tape should not be applied to a road if rainfall occured within 24 hours.
