Customer about to buy 6 copies of Office 2016 Home and Business, would suit me to install Office this weekend as part of a migration to 365 Exchange. Knowing he'll buy 6 copies next week I'd like to install Office 365 as part of a Business Professional trial, then next week re activate the clients with the purchased 2016 licenses - Will it work, or will I end up having to uninstall- reinstall?
Any guesses?

You're going to end up with central licensing headaches and activation issues.

If they haven't purchased yet, which it sounds like they haven't, then buy your licensing through O365. Your break even is right around 2.5-3 years depending on if you go through a licensing provider or not. By that time, a new release will be out since Microsoft releases at 3 year increments, so you'll also have the benefit of always having up to date software.

Skip the retail copies and just do the O365 subscription. Management is much easier and always have the latest version.

Like everyone so far has said.  Go straight to O365 if that is the final goal.  We run retail copies of Office 2016 here and our email is O365.  That was the way it was supposed to be BUT then this manager and that manager wanted more than just email and as a result we were paying for full blown versions of O365 and these guys now had both licenses which is just a waste of money. 

If all you want from O365 is email then go retail for Office but it probably won't last and you will end up with a bunch of unused retail licenses.

Thanks guys - but that doesn't answer my question. I understand the pros and cons of subscription vs. purchase, but in this instance my customer will buy the 2016 license.
Once that decision is made, I'm after knowing if I can reactivate a 365 install with a 2016 key.
